Hello friends! Let me be the first to welcome you to my little corner of the internet: This Girl Knows It. My name is Charlotte and I am the wanderlust girl behind the blog, as well as an aspiring girl boss and college student with a passion for photography, writing, and design.
This page that you stumbled upon is the about page for my blog, which basically means I’m contemplating everything I know about myself to sound more interesting and non-redundant on paper. (Or “on screen” in this case, I guess?) Because let’s be honest, some things about me are obvious (like that I’m a blogger) and some things you probably don’t care about (like that I would wear tulle skirts and tiaras 24/7 if that was acceptable).
However, I do have this fancy blurb about my blogging journey right underneath here, where I explain how my blog got started and transformed over the years. And underneath that is where I’ve hidden my “About Me” if you’re still interested in getting to know more about me. So let’s get started…
My Blogging Journey
I pressed publish on the first version of this blog back in January 2017. That first version was originally called “Letters From Sunshine” and included a weird-looking theme, a blog logo made on Google Drive, and 3 cringe-worthy posts that I thought were the best thing to come to the blogging world since sliced bread and avocados. (Because everyone knows how much us millennials—and especially us bloggers—like avocado toast.) Even though the posts were awful and I avoid looking at them whenever I can, they were the start of my blog and the incredible journey that has brought me to where I am today.
But let’s rewind a bit, shall we?
I first began thinking about starting a blog back in high school when I was going through the college admissions process. I was an avid blog reader back then (thanks to Pinterest, of course), and there were many bloggers that helped me through the process. Even so, I was still having my own unique experiences and the lessons that came from them. As these happened, I began thinking about starting my own blog to help college-bound students like myself.
After thinking about it for a looooooooong time, I finally jumped into it and launched the blog on January 17, 2017. I had specifically chosen that date for 2 reasons: (1) because it made my blog’s “birthday” be 1/17/17, which was the closest thing I could get to a memorable pattern without waiting for July to role around, and (2) it was the first day of my second semester of college. Since I was blogging about college back then, I saw this as being extremely important.
However, my blog and I quickly begin to change. As I continued writing and learning more about blogging, social media, and graphic design, my own personal brand and style began to evolve as well. In September of that same year, I went through a small re-brand, slightly changing some of my topics (but still blogging primarily about college) and changing my blog’s name to Forever Charlotte Nicole. I wasn’t in love with the new name, but I liked it a lot better than Letters From Sunshine. At the time, I was also feeling a lot of pressure to incorporate my name into the blog’s name as well; some articles I read even insisted on it, and feeling like they must know best, I obliged.
I guess I should have remembered the #1 rule of the internet: Don’t believe everything you read.
After taking some time off during winter break to travel to Europe, I came back to the U.S. just in time to start the Spring semester and celebrate my one-year blogiversary. Ironically, I was simultaneously struggling with blog content. Throughout that entire semester, I only wrote 3 blog posts.
More and more, I began realizing that college blogging was becoming a chore for me. I was running out of ideas, and when I did come up with one, actually writing the blog post felt like a chore. Even worse, I felt like I had run out of the valuable input I had on college (a.k.a. my scholarship posts, which continue to be some of my most popular posts), and anything else I did would be re-inventing the wheel.
This put me in a very sticky spot. I didn’t want to quit blogging, I knew that. Blogging had introduced me to new friends, a whole new skill set, and was helping me out in my career in ways that I never could have imagined. At the same time, however, I knew I couldn’t keep blogging about college. It just wasn’t me anymore, and no matter how hard I tried, it just wasn’t working.
So SURPRISE! I decided to re-brand again.
This time, I wasn’t just changing the name, I was going ALL OUT. New blog name, new designs, new niche, new colors, new theme, you name it. I wanted my blog re-brand to be like one of those television shows where they completely demolish the inside of a house, and then flip it into something so amazing that you couldn’t believe it was the same house as before.
And with that, “This Girl Knows It” was born.
Nowadays, I focus on travel. Mind you, it’s cheap travel, as I’m still in college and on that tight budget that everyone likes to joke about; but the more I’ve traveled to different places, the more important I realized that traveling is to me. It has introduced me to new ideas, customs, people, places, and experiences. Traveling is when I feel most alive, and this blog will push me to experience that feeling even more, and then share my stories and tips with everyone.
Along with travel, I also write a little bit about blogging itself! Two blog re-brands in almost 2 years has taught me a lot about blogging (even if it was mostly from trial-and-error). I’ve even been a social media manager for a local company! I guess it just goes to show that you never know what opportunities lie in your path, and I will be sharing everything that I know with y’all.
From this point, my blog is still evolving and changing with me, and although the journey has been rough, I wouldn’t give it up for anything.
Wow. You just finished reading about the train wreck that is my blogging journey and you’re still wanting to learn more about me? Either it wasn’t as bad as I thought or you’re just incredibly bored.
Please, spare me my feelings and don’t tell me which one.
I’ve lived a lot of places throughout my life (both abroad and in the United States), but most of my time growing up was spent in Kentucky. Situated almost perfectly in the middle of the East Coast, it meant I spent a lot of time traveling both to the Northeast and the Southeast throughout my childhood. This gave me an early love for travel, but it didn’t manifest completely until I was in college and visited my family in England over winter break. All of a sudden, my desire to see more of the world grew tenfold and I began blogging about my travels. Finding that I liked writing about travel a lot more than college, I decided to re-brand the blog. But you already knew that, didn’t you? 😜
However, when I’m not traveling, you’ll either find me sitting in a classroom (shout-out to my fellow Interior Design/Architecture students!), writing on this blog, learning more about photo-editing, or obsessing about tulle skirts. There’s no such thing as too many tulle skirts.
Oh, and on the topic of college, I’m also a current participant in the Disney College Program! This means that I am living in Florida for a few months while working at Walt Disney World. During my off days you can find me taking Disney classes (I gotta earn my “mousters” degree!), attending networking events, and spending time at the parks. If there’s a limit to how many times I can ride Jungle Cruise before it gets old, then I haven’t hit it yet.
Got any more questions for me? Go ahead and ask! You can find me on social media (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook), through email, or by submitting a message on this fancy contact form my website has. Can’t wait to hear from you!
